Due to the speed cap, thrusting towards their target/destination will gradually kill off their transverse velocity. However, they would get to their destination faster and be less prone to orbiting something that they're trying to close with if they could thrust in a direction that opposes their transverse velocity while accelerating towards their target.

However, ships with forward-firing weapons that are in range of their primary hostile target should prioritize aiming over maneuvering.
