Core Principles

As the first system in the (vanilla) game, Eridani needs to be easy to play, exciting, and re-playable.

The first ten minutes of the game should highlight the core game mechanic: combat, looting, upgrades. We need the core UI to be explained (via help system). In addition, we need to give the player the thrill of getting an upgrade that helps them.

The first hour of the game should cover a lot of ground. Think of it as the pilot episode of a series: we need to show all the cool stuff that is going to make people want to play more. For example:

  • The main mission arc (Fiona) needs to hook the player into the storyline. Benedict should keep giving missions (beyond Eridani) to continue the story. We might also want to introduce more plot points (perhaps some related missions before Fiona shows up).
  • Other mission arcs should give the player good/interesting rewards.
  • Mission arcs should hint about future systems, such as the Battle Arena, St. Katharine's Star, Sanctuary, and even Point Juno. Eridani should have info/rumors on any system that is known at the start of the game.
  • There should be an intro to the Charon Pirates in Eridani; maybe even a one-off escort mission (which leads to Korolov).
  • There should be a militia mission. Starton Eridani should have a militia level with a restricted set of missions.
  • We need a story arc for mining.

We should be able to do a 1 hour Twitch episode of Eridani and have people excited about the game.

Finally, we need Eridani to be replayable such that when the player starts again, it is immediately obvious that some things are different. Maybe only a few things are different, but the difference should be obvious relatively quickly.

Encounters

Sisters of Domina

This is likely to be the first station the player docks with. The player learns about Domina and their main quest (reach the core); they meet Benedict and go through a quick tutorial/training regiment.

Destroy Enemy Station

Guaranteed Mission
Challenge: Destroy major station (need WMD)
Reward: Level 3 SmartCannon
Exposition: More about specific enemy.

The penultimate challenge is to destroy an enemy station, usually an Abbasid or Urak outpost. The wreckage has a SmartCannon plus appropriate ammo.

Fiona's Freighter

Guaranteed Mission
Challenge: Escort Fiona's freighter and defend it against Penitent attack
Reward: Jewel of Contemplation (worth 2,000 credits or 48 Domina points).
Exposition: Introduction to Oracus and Penitents
Development: Who attacked Fiona and why?

The final mission in this encounter is to escort the freighter carrying Fiona back to the station. The player fights Penitents.

Commonwealth Militia

At Starton Eridani, the player talks to Enrico Gaul, a militia captain charged with organizing volunteers. Captain Gaul sends the player out on missions in exchange for money. The player gets three or four missions, randomly chosen from the list below. The missions reveal more about the Commonwealth, its culture, and the challenges it faces.

Intercept Drug Smugglers

Guaranteed Mission
Challenge: Intercept and destroy outlaw transport
Reward: 400 credits
Exposition: Outlaws, smugglers, Black Market, and drugs.

Destroy Enemy Station

Guaranteed Mission
Challenge: Destroy an enemy station in the system
Reward: Varies by station type
Exposition: Enemies of the Commonwealth

The target is chosen randomly, but we make sure to pick targets the player can actually destroy. E.g., we do not choose a target that requires WMD if the player cannot destroy it.

Rescue Commonwealth Freighter

Guaranteed Mission
Challenge: Defend freighter against pirates
Reward: 400 credits (600 if patient rescued)
Exposition: Charon pirates?

The player must defend a damaged Antares II freighter from Charon pirates. They must also take a patient in a rejuv tank back to the station before they die.

Raisu Station

Raisu station has been taken over by Centauri warlords. When the player first visits, the citizens are hiding and fearful of retribution from the warlords. If the player destroys 3 or more Centauri warlord camps, the station master at Raisu helps the player. She gives the player missiles and points her to Arco Vaughn.

Gain the Trust of Raisu Station

Guaranteed Mission
Challenge: Destroy 3 or more Centauri warlord camps
Reward: Level 2 DM1500 missile rack (or level 2 KM500 stiletto missiles, or equivalent).
Exposition: Centauri warlords, Arco Vaughn

Kill Arco Vaughn

Guaranteed Mission
Challenge: Kill Arco Vaughn
Reward: Level 3 enhanced heavy reactive armor (or other upgrade)
Exposition: Arco Vaughn abandoned by his father.

Medical Colony

If there's a medical colony in the system (~34% chance) then the player can get a pointer to an institute that treats pilgrims.

Random Mission (~34%)
Challenge: None
Reward: None
Exposition: Pilgrims and their compulsion
Development: Can Pilgrims be cured? How?

Mining Colony

Rewards

Eridani has some unique rewards:

  • Level 3 SmartCannon: The player gets this during the initial Benedict tutorial.
  • Level 2 DM1500 Disposable Missile Rack: Raisu gives out this weapon for the player to challenge Arco Vaughn
  • Level 3 Centauri Nanos: Killing Arco Vaughn has a chance of finding Centauri nanos, which enhance armor.
  • Level 3 TR-200 Auton: Reward for completing a mission (TBD).

Commonwealth Militia Notes

  • These missions don't count as real Militia missions; they are just for volunteers. However, succeeding in at least one (net of failures) will count towards allowing the player to dock at a Commonwealth Fortress.
  • If the player already has Militia rank, then they get real Militia missions (different criteria).
  • The lowest rank is Volunteer, which we show if the player has completed any mission but is still not ranked (rank is Nil).

One suggestion (courtesy of IronParrot) that was made on the most recent Thursday stream: Have the station master at Raisu Station give the location of all remaining Centauri camps in the system once Arco Vaughn has been defeated.

On a related note, I'd suggest explicitly guiding players to "start in Eridani" ships if they're new. This can be as simple as saying "this ship is recommended for new players" in the ship description screen. Starting in...uh, the CC starting system, I forget its name...is more chaotic and definitely less guided than the Eridani start.

I also suggest cluing the player into the fact that you can find stations and gates by following other ships around. Telling them to check near planets and asteroid fields is good but it doesn't always reveal everything.

...it might be worth adding a validation to Eridani to ensure that every station (except for Arco's habitat of course) spawns either next to a planet or near an asteroid field.

I think most newbies will be pressured to make enough money to sustain their fuel consumption and I found it really hard to progress after challenging myself not to destroy all of the enemy stations in the starting system for easy credits.

Most newbies too will think that the first objective is to get considerably powerful weapons and better shields but one can easily overlook the "high power consumption" problem. I have played Transcendence back in 2010 and came back to start a new game with awe and wonder of the game with so much improvement after 9 years! But I was quickly hit hard with a big problem after rushing a 25MW mammoth deflector... my fuel consumption was insane and I didn't have much money to sustain it.

I think it's good to have every single important thing be taught in the starting system for newbies in order to strengthen their immersion of the game before they are encouraged to quit due to the harsh difficulty of the journey i.e. getting better armor, a questline where they will intentionally have to equip a high-power shield and deliberately lose all fuel in their ship but rescued by a quest-ship afterwards in order for the player to realize the plight of that setup, as well as being taught the strategic use of disabling equipment, and etc.

The starting system has a lot to improve in order to be more newbie friendly but I think these are the most important things that needs focus for starters.
